Persuasion 205 | Don’t waste your vote

OROur country stands at a crucial crossroads… or so we have been told, in myriad ways, on both sides of the political spectrum. We need new leadership or much the same…we need more judges of one kind or another…we need to get more seats on our side if our values and policies are to prevail . With so much at stake, we’re told that every vote counts. No one can be wasted on third party candidates. No one can be chosen for the side that does not promise some return on our political investment. Voting is a serious matter, with disastrous consequences for our way of life.

In this episode of Persuasion, Erin Straza and Hannah Anderson conclude theirs For God and country series. Each episode tackled one aspect of how faith and politics collide. This final conversation looks at the value and power of a single vote, the one we’ve been given for each item on our ballot. Voting is indeed a privilege, but in these politically charged days, the burden of casting our vote right is heavy indeed. There’s fear and guilt all mixed together, and it’s used by both sides to push us into choosing the way that benefits their party. Furthermore, Christians also struggle with the burden of making the right choice, one that honors God and his ways. Messages over the years among the religious right have implied that Christians need to keep their voting hands clean. To help solve this conundrum, Erin speaks to Alan Noble, editor-in-chief of Christ and Pop Culture. Alan’s recent Public Address article titled « Christian Witness Demands That We Stand For The Truth And Reject Donald Trump » argues that the truth is what Christians need to worry most about when they vote next month. Is it possible to keep one’s vow pure? Is it even possible to waste your vote if you cast it in the best way you know how? How does God’s sovereignty overcome our voting anxiety? Hear dialogue on issues like these as we learn to think more clearly about the intersection of faith and politics. Then keep the conversation going on Twitter @PersuasionCAPC or in the CAPC members-only community on Facebook.
