Persuasion 204 | Don’t Be So Political, with Kathryn Freeman
wWith the amount of turmoil typically associated with conversation and political engagement, it can be very tempting to seek a reprieve. Every issue is truly connected to the common good for which we are called to work. But when every conversation turns into a politically charged exchange, it’s quite tempting to ask others to stop being so political all the time. While tempting, however, what is really behind our desire for others not to be so political?
In this episode of Persuasion, Erin Straza and Hannah Anderson continue with the For God and country series. Each episode will address one aspect of how faith and politics collide. This conversation features Kathryn Freeman, who is a fellow writer of Christ and Pop Culture and co-host of Faith Melanata podcasts. Kathryn’s legal background in public policy and current graduate work at Baylor University’s Truett Seminary provide excellent insight into our desire for others to stop turning every issue into a political issue. The discussion covers not only how we want to monitor and control our personal conversations, but also the conversations we hear from celebrities and public figures. Our consumer mentality mistakenly gives us the sense that we can demand words or silence from entertainers, as if they were mere commodities rather than the fully formed beings who are a vital part of creating the common good. Much of what motivates us to ask others to keep quiet about political issues comes from the need to control the conversation. Those with social power tend to assume that they can decide who gets to speak and under what circumstances. Can we put discomfort aside to truly listen and engage with different political views? What if we welcome the political conversation rather than try to shut it down? Can we strike down our demands that public figures merely perform and entertain? Hear dialogue on issues like these as we learn to think more clearly about the intersection of faith and politics. Then keep the conversation going on Twitter @PersuasionCAPC or in the CAPC members-only community on Facebook.
