Kirk Cousins: ‘I feel blessed that I got a long-term deal before everyone knew I wasn’t that good’
(SP) – New Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins said today that he feels « absolutely blessed and fortunate » to finally receive a long-term, big-money deal in the NFL.
« This has been a race against time now for several years, » a visibly relieved Cousins said after officially signing a three-year, $84 million contract with the Vikings, all fully guaranteed. “Every season I played on a one-year contract there was an increased risk of everything around me falling apart and the league remembering that I’m just Kirk Cousins. Fortunately, and by God’s grace, I was able to fool everyone for quite some time. »
Continued Cousins over Vikings GM Rick Spielman’s attempts to cut him: “And to end up here with the Vikings just shows that the Lord works in mysterious and surprising ways. Think about it: last year they had a quarterback in Case Keenum, right, who was the same age as me but had better numbers across the board. and led them deep into the playoffs. However, they let him go and I wish DOUBLE what they could have had him. And he knows their offense! I’m starting from scratch. It’s just crazy. Thank you, Jesus, is all I can say. I’m so blessed. »
Spielman then signaled to an employee to cut off Cousins’ microphone, which went dead after the team’s new quarterback added one more thing: “I want to be a Viking for life. But I really doubt they’ll want to keep me beyond those three years. I’m sure they will regret this deal very much. »
